What Is the CPCS A59 360° Excavator Course?

The CPCS A59 course trains you to operate tracked 360° excavators used for lifting, digging, trenching, and loading on construction sites.

It covers:

A59A – Excavators below 10 tonnes
A59B – Excavators above 10 tonnes

After completing the course and tests, you’ll receive the CPCS Red Trained Operator Card, required on most UK construction sites.

Step-by-Step: How to Get the CPCS A59 Excavator Card

Pass the CITB HS&E Test: Must be taken within 2 years before CPCS training. We can book this for you.
Choose the Right Course: A59A (Below 10t) or A59B (Above 10t) – or both. Choose Novice or Experienced Worker route.
Attend the Course:
Novice (5–6 Days): In-depth theory + hands-on practice
Experienced (1–2 Days): Key skills + test prep
Pass the CPCS Tests:
Theory – verbal multiple-choice
Practical – on-site excavator operation
Receive Your CPCS Red Card: Valid for 2 years, registered with CPCS.
Upgrade to CPCS Blue Card:
Complete NVQ Level 2 in Plant Operations
Log on-site experience
Apply for the Blue Card (5-year validity)
